Health and Safety Protocol for Compass Retreats
Purpose: The Health and Safety Protocol outlines the measures and procedures in place to ensure the safety, well-being, and health of all participants, clinicians, and staff involved in Compass Retreats. This protocol aims to create a safe and supportive environment where individuals can focus on personal growth and development.
Scope: This protocol applies to all participants, clinicians, staff, and visitors associated with Compass Retreats.
1. Commitment to Health and Safety
The Gateways Program is committed to maintaining a safe environment by adhering to all applicable health and safety regulations and best practices. All participants and staff share the responsibility for promoting and maintaining safety throughout the program.
2. Risk Assessment
Pre-Retreat Assessments: Conduct comprehensive risk assessments prior to the retreat to identify potential hazards associated with facilities, activities, and the environment.
Ongoing Assessments: Continuous risk assessments will be conducted throughout the retreat, particularly before physical activities or excursions.
3. Emergency Procedures
Emergency Contacts: Keep a list of emergency contacts readily available, including local emergency services, medical facilities, and crisis support services. Where possible, meet with and visit local clinicians and facilities prior to the retreat to determine suitability, exclusion criteria and intake process. Rely on local authorities directive for how to respond appropriately.
4. First Aid and Medical Support
First Aid Kits: Ensure that adequately stocked first aid kits are available at all program locations, including common areas and activity sites.
First Aid Training: Designate staff members who are trained in first aid and CPR to be present during all program activities.
Access to Medical Services: Identify and provide information on the nearest medical facilities for urgent care. Participants must be made aware of how to access medical assistance if needed.
5. Health Screening
Pre-Retreat Health Assessments: Require participants to complete health assessments that identify any pre-existing conditions or health concerns. Ensure that participants provide medical information relevant to their safety while participating in activities.
Symptom Monitoring: During the retreat, monitor participants for signs of physical or psychological distress, and provide immediate support or intervention as necessary.
6. Hygiene and Sanitation
Personal Hygiene Practices: Encourage participants to follow personal hygiene practices, including regular handwashing, especially before meals and after activities.
Facility Cleaning: Implement regular cleaning and sanitization protocols for all areas accessed by participants, including common spaces, accommodations, and dining areas.
Upon initiation of the retreat ensure that the participants are informed about how to remain hygienic and safe in the host country i.e. not brushing teeth with tap water in Bali etc.
7. Participant Responsibilities
Personal Health: Participants are responsible for informing staff of any health issues or changes in their condition during the retreat.
Compliance with Safety Measures: Participants are expected to comply with all health and safety protocols, including the use of protective equipment if required (e.g., during activities).
8. Incident Reporting
Reporting Procedure: Establish a clear process for reporting health and safety incidents or concerns. All staff and participants should be encouraged to report any incidents immediately.
Documentation: Document all incidents, injuries, and near-misses to analyse patterns and implement preventative measures.
9. Staff Training
Health and Safety Training: Provide regular training for all staff on health and safety protocols, emergency response procedures, and participant safety measures.
Ongoing Development: Incorporate updates and revisions to training materials as needed to reflect current best practices in health and safety.
10. Review of the Protocol
This Health and Safety Protocol will be reviewed annually or as necessary to ensure its effectiveness, compliance with legal requirements, and alignment with best practices. Staff and participants will be informed of any changes to the protocol.
